World War I is an old-fashioned retro RTS (real-time strategy) in which you can try yourself in the role of the army commander. You can play for armed forces of Nazi Germany, Russia, and European Allies in the period of World War I (1914 – 1918). This game is historically precise and provides highly logical gameplay. World War I downloading is available exclusively for Windows PC on Steam game store.
This game was released by Dark Fox and 1C Entertainment in far 2005, so this World War I review includes some pamperings. However, the visuals of this RTS are still quite nice. It’s a great example of a game that doesn’t lose its charm through the years. The Enigma graphical engine from Blitzkrieg series renders great retro performance with bright colors, blocky textures, and clumsy physical models.
In this franchise, you can be a commander of 3 armies, such as newborn Soviet Russia, Nazi Germany and Allies from European countries. The whole of Europe is in chaos, because the 3 main empires began to disappear. The armed conflict between Germany and other countries became the first warfare of a kind in human history. This war was very brutal as it was the first time when people used chemical weapons, first tanks, and other armored machines, planes and trains.
To complete the game, you have to participate in famous World War I battles and command infantry, cavalry, tanks, armored cars, air forces, and artillery. It’s not just about shooting to kill your enemies. It’s about thinking 2 steps forward to anticipate moves of your hostiles. You should make each step carefully and logically. The more soldiers you save, the more respect you get as a commander. Victory is a bloody word.
World War I is a PC strategy game in which you have to give orders to dozens of soldiers and machines simultaneously. That’s why all actions can be done with a mouse. For example, to choose all soldiers, you have to hold the left button and move a mouse to unite all units with a green rectangle. It’s like choosing multiple objects on the Windows desktop.

This game is comparable with checkers. You can pass the game many times, but the process will look differently every time you play. In addition, World War I has 4 levels of difficulty that require different efforts and approach. Try to pass the whole campaign to understand how immersive it is.
The Bottom Line
World War I RTS is a great retro game with charming Enigma engine graphics, historically accurate plot, real locations, weapons, and mechanical armored units. This game is definitely worth the attention of all RTS and retro gaming fans. It’s a good way to learn some WWI history, true warfare tactics, and logic.
