Professional Review

Delta Force is a 1st person shooter with a non-linear approach to tactical objectives. This game was developed by NovaLogic and published by Electronic Arts in late 1998. As a competitor of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, it gained lower popularity, but showed huge potential. Today, Delta Force downloading is still available for Windows PC exclusively on Steam

Graphics 4.5/5

Of course, this Delta Force review follows 1998 standards. So, the quality of graphics in this video game deserves to be called great. DF visuals were designed on NovaLogic’s own graphical engine called Voxel Space. This technology used to be very progressive as it used voxels instead of regular polygons. Surprisingly, the distance of view is very high. In fact, there is technically no end to deserts in DF. The Steam version provides slightly remastered graphics that are not so blocky, but you still can see voxel terrains.

Gameplay 4.5/5

At the beginning, Delta Force offers you to choose a soldier skin and give him a name. You are free to create up to 9 soldier slots to play them separately. After that, you have to choose one of quick missions. That’s where DF will astonish you again. Each mission implies a non-linear walkthrough. Unlike the more popular Rainbow Six, you can literary walk anywhere you want. Such freedom used to be extremely impressive in 1998.

There are 3 types of quite uncomplicated missions in DF. The first type gives you a mission to kill everyone on the map, second is about saving certain hostages, and the third has the most dramatic objective: you have to explode a convoy. Enemies in this title are quite competitive. They can kill you with one shot as well as you can. It means that all shootouts are reaction speed challenges.

Back to the terrain, there are 5 different open world locations that bring you to desert, jungle and Russian tundra. There are even night locations that provide an ultimate stealth experience. The most hardcore feature of DF gameplay is an absence of savepoints. You can also try to play the online multiplayer mode, but in the 90s it worked absolutely awful.

Controls 5/5

Delta Force controls are greatly balanced and responsive. The distance between your character and enemies is usually big, but that’s not a problem due to the convenient aiming mode. You just have to press the right mouse button and aim in a magnifying circle.

Replay Value 4.5/5

Well, it’s quite hard to imagine some replaying Delta Force time after time 21 years after its release. However, the power of randomness is high enough to hold you thrilled during each new session. Moving and navigation in DF is standard for all PC shooters.

The Bottom Line

Delta Force is a greatly remarkable retro gaming experience. It’s simply hard to believe that such cool graphics and elaborate gameplay was possible 2 decades ago. This title is a must-have for all retro gaming fans as it’s one of the very first open-world shooters. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to enjoy multiplayer sessions anymore, because all servers are down for as long as 15 years.

Conclusion

All retro gaming fans must download Delta Force for a pleasant journey into the unbelievably worked virtual combat of the past.
